Items You Cannot Throw Away
Hazardous Waste
Paint, chemicals, and motor oil.
Tires & Batteries
Tires and batteries can't go in your dumpster because they require special disposal to protect the environment and comply with local regulations. Learn more about tire recycling here
How to get rid of them properly:
- Tires: Most local auto shops or tire centers accept old tires for a small recycling fee.
- Car Batteries: Drop them off at auto part stores, battery recycling centers, or your local hazardous waste facility. Many retailers accept used car batteries when you buy a new one.
Propane Tanks & Gas Cylinders
Propane tanks and gas cylinders can't go in your dumpster unless they're properly prepared, because they can explode under pressure, even when they are "empty". Contact us if you have questions about tanks here.
What "properly prepped" means:
- Tanks must be empty, with valves removed.
- Most towns require tanks to be punctured or cut in half to ensure they can't hold pressure.
- If you are unsure how to do this safely, do not attempt this yourself; contact your local propane supplier or recycling center.
Best disposal option:
- Exchange used tanks at a propane refill station (some hardware stores offer this as well)
- Drop them off at a household hazardous waste collection site.
Liquids & Flammable Materials
No fuels, solvents, or wet paint.
